Winter Festivities in Long Island and Queens, NY

If you’re planning a move to Long Island or Queens, NY, you’ve got a lot to look forward to. There’s so much to see and do that your calendar will always be full. And winter festivals and holiday events abound when the temperature drops and the days grow shorter. Here are a few favorite, don’t-miss celebrations of the season.

NYC Lantern Festival

Ring in the festive season and make memories at this stunning display. The NYC Lantern Festival lights up the winter sky from November through January. A massive collection of LED lights decorates the Queens County Farm, creating shapes that sparkle and amaze. Add Chinese lanterns and twinkling flowers, and it’s easy to see why this event has been a local favorite for years. The Lantern Festivals also occur at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn and the Smithtown Historical Society.

Riverhead Holiday Light Show

Feel like being dazzled? Then head to the Riverhead Holiday Light Show at the Calverton Splish Splash Waterpark. This Long Island tradition lights up the night with hundreds of huge light sculptures, all with a holiday theme. Pack up the car with your favorite snacks and get ready to be amazed as you drive slowly through the synchronized light show.

18th Century Tavern Nights

Head to Queens County Farm Museum and travel back in time. On special weekends in December, you can be the special guest at an 18th-century tavern. You’ll enjoy a delicious and hearty feast cooked over an open flame, all eaten by candlelight. It’s truly a blast from the past! Tickets are required for these special events that bring history to life.

Winter Wonderland at Waterdrinker Family Farm

In December, take a field trip to the Winter Wonderland at Waterdrinker Family Farm.  Here, you’ll find all things holidays, from a Gingerbread Village to a giant wreath (perfect for photo opp), caroling to light displays, and an Airstream village to u-pick Christmas trees. Take the chance to pet the barnyard animals before roasting delicious, toasty s’mores over the fire pit.

Bright Lights: Celebrate the Season

Starting the week of Thanksgiving, the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum will open its doors each weekend through December for the Bright Lights: Celebrate the Season program. Take a candlelight tour of the Vanderbilt Mansion, all decorated for the holiday season, attend the holiday laser show in the Reichert Planetarium, and enjoy the white lights that make the grounds festive. Be sure to stop by the gift shop on the way out for some holiday shopping!
