Moving in the Lower East Side, East Village and Chinatown
Updated October 11, 2026
Many moves in this part of Manhattan start or end in a walk-up. The buildings are old, the stairs are many, and the truck routes near Chinatown changed in October 2026. Here is what matters on moving day.
Old buildings, many stairs
The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the East Village/Lower East Side Historic District on October 9, 2012: about 325 buildings along Second Avenue and the side streets between East 2nd and East 7th Streets. Its report describes tenements built from the 1850s to the early 1900s, before and after the tenement laws of 1879 and 1901.
For a move, that usually means stairs. Tell the mover the floor, measure the sofa, the bed frame and the dresser, and measure the narrowest turn in the stairwell. If something will not fit, it is better to know before moving day.
No trucks on the FDR Drive
NYC DOT lists the FDR Drive among the roads closed to commercial vehicles, and it says the Brooklyn Bridge has commercial vehicle restrictions too. Moving trucks reach the Lower East Side on the city truck routes, so the route is not always the one your map app shows for a car.
Truck route changes near Chinatown
The NYC DOT truck route changes that took effect on October 4, 2026 add Canal Street between Forsyth Street and Allen Street, and East Broadway between Chatham Square and Pike Street. The same list removes Division Street between the Bowery and Allen Street, Forsyth Street between Canal Street and Division Street, and a short piece of Allen Street near Division Street. A careful mover plans the route with the new list.
The curb
Tell the mover about hydrants, bus stops, bike lanes and loading zones in front of both buildings, and check the alternate side parking rules for the day. A clear spot near the door saves a long carry.
Small apartments, smart packing
Studios and one-bedrooms move faster when everything is packed and labeled before the crew arrives. Keep boxes small for books and kitchen items, so each trip up and down the stairs is safe.
Common questions
Can moving trucks use the FDR Drive?
No. NYC DOT lists the FDR Drive among the roads closed to commercial vehicles.
Did truck routes change on the Lower East Side?
Yes. Changes took effect on October 4, 2026, on Canal Street, East Broadway, Division Street, Forsyth Street and Allen Street. The official list is linked below.
My building is a five-floor walk-up. Is that a problem?
No, but stairs take longer than an elevator. Tell the mover the floor so the estimate matches the work.
Does a walk-up need a certificate of insurance?
Some managed buildings ask for one even without an elevator. Ask the management office early.
