Moving in Sheepshead Bay, Brighton Beach and Coney Island
Updated October 11, 2026
Sheepshead Bay, Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach, Coney Island, Gravesend and Midwood sit close together, but a moving truck cannot always take the road a car would. A little planning about the route, the curb and the building keeps a southern Brooklyn move short, and a shorter move costs less.
Ocean Parkway and the Belt are closed to trucks
NYC DOT lists the Belt Parkway and Ocean Parkway among the roads where commercial vehicles are not allowed. A moving truck cannot use the Belt to reach Bay Ridge, Queens or the Rockaways, and NYC DOT lists Ocean Parkway the same way. It uses the city truck routes instead, so the drive can take longer than it would by car.
If your building faces Ocean Parkway, look at the nearest side street before moving day and tell the mover where a truck can stop. Signs on the block always win, so read them.
Truck route changes from October 4, 2026
NYC DOT changed the city truck route network on October 4, 2026. In this part of Brooklyn the official list adds truck route segments on:
- Surf Avenue between West 17th Street and West 8th Street, plus West 17th Street and West 8th Street between Surf Avenue and Neptune Avenue (Coney Island);
- Avenue P between Kings Highway and East 16th Street, and East 16th Street between Avenue P and Kings Highway;
- Avenue P between Dahill Road and 65th Street, and Dahill Road between 65th Street and Avenue P.
The same list removes Avenue U between Flatbush Avenue and East 55th Street. NYC DOT says a new truck route map will follow. Until then, the official list below is the one to check.
The curb on moving day
Check the alternate side parking rules for your block. On days when alternate side parking is suspended, parked cars can stay all day, so free curb space is harder to find and an early start helps. Tell the mover about hydrants, bus stops, driveways and bike lanes in front of the building.
Elevator buildings, walk-ups and houses
For an elevator building, ask the management office for move hours, an elevator reservation and the certificate of insurance (COI) sample, for both the old and the new address. For a walk-up or a house, count the stairs, measure the sofa, the bed and the dresser, and measure the tightest turn they must pass. These details decide how long the move takes.
Moving out of southern Brooklyn
A move to Staten Island crosses the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, an MTA crossing. A move to another state follows federal rules: check the mover on the FMCSA website and read the estimate. The company behind this site holds U.S. DOT No. 967970.
