Studio and One-Bedroom Moves in NYC: A Simple Plan
Updated October 10, 2026
Most New York moves are studios and one-bedrooms. They are smaller, but stairs, elevators and parking still decide how long they take. A simple plan keeps them short.
Two weeks before
Ask your building for move rules, elevator reservations and the certificate of insurance (COI) sample, for both the old and the new building. Measure the large pieces: bed, sofa, desk and dresser, and the doors and stairs they must pass.
One week before
Pack what you do not use every day. Use small boxes for books and kitchen items and large boxes for bedding and pillows. Label each box on two sides with the room and contents.
The day before
Empty drawers, take down shelves and the TV, and take the bed apart if you can. Pack a bag with documents, chargers, medicine and a change of clothes. Clear the hallway.
Moving day
Show the crew anything fragile or valuable. Stay reachable by phone. At the new home, say where each room is so boxes go to the right place, and check the old apartment once it is empty.
What slows small moves down
Unpacked items, a sofa that does not fit the stairs, an elevator that was not reserved, and nowhere for the truck to stop. Each one is avoidable with a call to the building and a few measurements.
Common questions
How long does a studio move take in NYC?
It depends on stairs, elevator access and how much is packed. Give the mover those details for an accurate estimate.
Do I need a COI for a one-bedroom move?
If the building asks for it, yes. Many elevator buildings do. Ask for the sample early.
Should I take my bed apart before the movers come?
If you can, yes; it saves time. The crew can also do it.
Can a small move be done on short notice?
Often yes, if the building allows it. Call with your details.
