Moving to or from the Rockaways: Bridges, Routes and Utilities
Updated October 11, 2026
The Rockaway peninsula is part of Queens, but on moving day it works a little differently from the rest of the city: the bridges, the truck routes and even the electric company. Here is what to know.
Two MTA bridges
The Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge connects the peninsula with Brooklyn, and the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge connects it with Broad Channel and the rest of Queens. Both are MTA crossings. MTA crossings use cashless tolling, with E-ZPass or a bill mailed to the vehicle owner, and the MTA lists height limits for trucks on each bridge. Your mover pays the toll for the truck; ask whether your written estimate includes it.
The Belt Parkway is closed to trucks
NYC DOT lists the Belt Parkway among the roads closed to commercial vehicles, so a moving truck coming from Brooklyn or from mainland Queens uses the city truck routes. The changes that took effect on October 4, 2026 add the Nassau Expressway between Cross Bay Boulevard and Rockaway Boulevard to the truck route network.
Electricity: PSEG Long Island, not Con Edison
LIPA, the Long Island Power Authority, describes itself as the public utility for Long Island and the Rockaways, and PSEG Long Island runs the system under contract with LIPA. If you are moving to the Rockaways from elsewhere in the city, set up electric service with PSEG Long Island before moving day.
Houses, beach blocks and big buildings
The peninsula has houses, small buildings and large elevator buildings. For a building, ask about move hours, the elevator reservation and the certificate of insurance (COI). For a house, tell the mover about the driveway, the stairs and the walk from the curb, and check the parking signs on the block.
Moving on to Long Island or New Jersey
This site's movers work in New York City, Long Island, Westchester and New Jersey. For a move to another state, federal rules apply: check the mover on the FMCSA website. The company behind this site holds U.S. DOT No. 967970.
