Staten Island Moves: Bridges, Tolls and Truck Rules
Updated October 11, 2026
A moving truck reaches or leaves Staten Island only by bridge: the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to Brooklyn, or the Goethals Bridge, the Outerbridge Crossing and the Bayonne Bridge to New Jersey. Knowing how each one works helps you plan the day and read your estimate.
To and from Brooklyn: the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is run by MTA Bridges and Tunnels. MTA crossings use cashless tolling: E-ZPass, or a bill mailed to the vehicle owner. Trucks pay truck tolls, and the MTA lists the height limit for each level and direction of the bridge. Your mover pays the toll for the truck, so ask whether your written estimate includes it.
To and from New Jersey: Goethals, Outerbridge and Bayonne
These three bridges belong to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Its 2026 Truckers Guide says all Port Authority crossings are cashless, and that tolls are collected only when entering New York; no toll is collected entering New Jersey. The guide lists a height limit of 14 feet on all three bridges. For a move from Staten Island to New Jersey, the toll is paid on the trip into Staten Island, not on the trip out.
On the Island: no trucks on the Korean War Veterans Parkway
NYC DOT lists the Korean War Veterans Parkway among the roads closed to commercial vehicles, so moving trucks use the expressways and the city truck routes instead. The truck route changes that took effect on October 4, 2026 add these Staten Island segments:
- Hannah Street between Bay Street and Front Street;
- West Service Road between Arden Avenue and the West Shore Expressway;
- Drumgoole Road West between the Korean War Veterans Parkway and Richmond Avenue;
- Veterans Road West between Bloomingdale Road and the West Shore Expressway.
Houses, driveways and the walk from the curb
If you are moving from a house, tell the mover whether the truck can use the driveway, how far it is from the curb to the door, and how many stairs lead to the bedrooms or the basement. Measure large pieces and the doors they must pass. For an apartment building, ask about move hours, the elevator and the certificate of insurance (COI).
Moving farther away
For a move to another state, federal rules apply. Check the mover on the FMCSA website and read your rights before you sign. The company behind this site holds U.S. DOT No. 967970.
